Vithurs began learning search engine optimisation at the age of eleven. That detail is worth more than the usual biographical trivia, because of what it implies about the shape of the experience that followed: not a career change into search, but a long apprenticeship that started before search had settled into anything like its current form and has continued through every version since.

Close to two decades of that work covers the ground modern Answer Engine Optimization is assembled from. Technical search — crawling, indexing, canonicals, structured data, the plumbing that decides whether a document exists as far as a machine is concerned. Content — what is actually said, and whether it answers anything. Entity building — the slow work of making a subject legible as a thing rather than a string. Corroboration — getting the same fact said in more than one place by more than one party. And measurement — watching what systems do with all of it and adjusting.

None of those is new. What is new is the destination. For most of that period the object of the exercise was a position in a list of results. Increasingly the object is inclusion in a generated answer, where there is no list, often no click, and frequently only one name mentioned. That change is the subject of the year in AEO.

The field, stated plainly

• Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — making an entity usable inside a generated answer.
• Search engine optimisation (SEO) — the older discipline AEO grew out of, and still depends on.
• Entity authority — making a subject clear, consistent and well evidenced enough to be treated as a known thing.
• AI search visibility — being present in the answers AI systems generate, not only in the pages they index.
